Workers's camp at Baan Jo waterworks

When was the workers's camp allowed to be set up at the Baan Jo water-treatment plant? They are housed inside the restricted area by the water's edge and the sheets of corrugated iron used for the accommodation is bright and new.Are they now going to contaminate this water as their own private swimming pool and toilet facility? Can the authorities not clear them out? Disgraceful.

White center lines needed on roads near PIA

I would like to ask the relevant road works department to paint a center line on the road from Thepkrasattri Road to the Phuket International Academy and the Thanyapura Sport Complex. It is just a matter of time before a student or visitor is hurt or killed by vehicles crossing over the middle of the road, into oncoming traffic. Having a center line to separate traffic would help to avoid this. Thank you.

Reporting polluted waterways in Phuket

Is there a government department that receives complaints about the pollution of fresh-water streams by people discharging cooking waste material â“ such as meat, vegetable, oil, rice and so on â“ into a stream so that the waterway becomes more like a sewer than a natural water course?

Swings and roundabouts: Nai Harn playground needs repairs, again

In an Issue & Answer posted on the Phuket Gazette website on November 22, Rawai Mayor Aroon Solos said that he would have his people check on the children’s playground at the rest area at Nai Harn once every month (click here). He also said that he would inspect the area himself to make sure that the playground swings had been repaired and were no longer dangerous to children playing on them.I was happy for quite a while, but now just three months later, the condition of the swings are much worse than before. What happened?I don’t care which people are...

Waiting for a work permit

How long should it take for a work permit application to be processed? I am aware that the required non-immigrant B visa is valid for 90 days, but will a work permit application be processed before the permit-to-stay expires? Also, do applications for some professions take longer than others? And if I start work while waiting for my work permit to be issued, am I working illegally? What punitive measurements might I be liable to if working while waiting for my work permit to be issued?

Safely navigating the Heroines

The Heroines’ Monument roundabout is closed to through traffic during rush hour, with cones set up further down the road so drivers can safely make a u-turn.However, there are no signs warning motorists that the lane ahead is closed and that they will have to move into the left lane.I have seen a car driving over the cones, and many, many times I have seen drivers brake hard and quickly swerve into the left lane to avoid hitting them.In my opinion, these “safety cones” create a far more dangerous environment than just keeping the circle open during rush hour.Is it...

Is there a place to defend consumers rights?

I recently bought two bean bag chairs from Index Living Mall. Within a couple of days they started to fall apart, the seams opened and all the contents of both started to fall out.Yesterday, I found the time to get them back to Index and ask for a solution to this problem.I was surprised to hear that they don’t offer any quality warranty on their products and was told that the only way I could make an exchange is if the product is in good condition. All of my efforts to make customer service staff understand that I needed to exchange...

What is the rule/law in Phuket regarding speed bumps across a road?

The road near Como Hotel at Cape Yamu used to have a few speed bumps, but in the last couple of weeks more and more have appeared, usually overnight. There are now 13 across the road once you turn off the main road by the 7/11 convenience store. Many are new, difficult to see, and not good for car and bike suspension.I appreciate road safety, but can just anyone make these across the road? And shouldn’t they be clearly visible?

Badly repaired bridge

Beside the Escape de Phuket hotel on Pracha Uthit Soi 5 is a bridge. One side collapsed a few months ago, forcing the authorities to close it to traffic. But it was repaired poorly, and now a portion of the same side has subsided. Is there a “standard” for bridge repair?
