Retirement visa hangs in the balance

As a recently married man and a retiree, how much money do I need to have in my bank account when I renew my retirement visa each year? I married my Thai wife in December 2010, but when I renewed my visa in February 2011, I had to show that I had 800,000 baht in my Thai bank account, is that the right amount?

    Confused, married, Phuket

Foreigners applying for a [permit to stay based on a] retirement visa are required to present a bank statement showing that they have 800,000 baht in a bank account in Thailand.

However, there are other “visas” available for foreigners who do not meet the criteria for a retirement visa. You are welcome to come to the immigration office to see what other types may be available to you.

We issue “visas” on a case-by-case basis and you probably do not need to have 800,000 baht in your bank account to remain in the country.
