Five-year driving licenses
I am a foreigner who has lived in Thailand for four years on a non-immigrant type-O visa. I renew my Thai driving license every year, but a foreign friend of mine was recently issued a driving license that is valid for five years. Has the law changed recently?

A new law that came into effect last August allows us to issue driving licenses valid for five years. The five-year license was introduced because we no longer issue licenses that are valid for life. After people pass the driving test, they are issued linceses that are valid for only one year. But when they renew their licenses the following year, they may get licenses valid for five years. The documents required to apply for a driving license remain unchanged, but a five-year license costs five times the fee for a one-year license. Hence, the fee for a five-year car license is 525 baht and a five-year motorbike license costs 275 baht.
