24-hour gas stations

Why do gas stations in Phuket close so early? Some close as early as 7 pm, and some are open as late as 8 am. Are there any 24-hour gas stations on the island? And if so, where are they?

There are no laws regulating the hours that gas stations open or close. In January the government passed legislation that allows gas stations to trade 24 hours. Before then they had to close at 10 pm in accordance with the government’s previous national energy-saving policy.

So if gas stations cannot make a profit by trading at night, or if they want to save money on wages or their electricity bills, they can close early.

In Phuket there are three gas stations that are open 24 hours:

1. Shell gas station on Phang Nga Rd (near the Honda showroom), in Phuket City;

2. Shell gas station on Thepkrasattri Rd (near the Heroines’ monument) in Thalang;

3. Caltex gas station on Phisit Gorani Rd (near the Kathu District Office, on the 4029 highway to Patong), in Kathu.
