Phuket Gazette

PHUKET: I’ve been losing sleep lately thinking about all the poison I’ve subjected myself to during 12 years in Thailand – alcohol, sugar, fatty and acidic foods, traffic smog, secondhand smoke and perhaps the biggest culprit of them all: water.

I’m referring to fluoridated water, and the “forced-medication” of the planet’s prime life supply – drinking water.

The practice, which the US Centers for Disease Control once called “one of the 10 greatest achievements of the 20th Century”, is now one of the most heated health debates of our time, called by activist groups such as the Fluoride Action Network an “outdated form of mass-medication; an unnecessary, ineffective and unsafe practice”.

The more I researched, the more alarming I realized the topic was… is. Governments around the world are adding artificial and highly toxic forms of fluoride – sodium fluoride, fluorosilicic acid and sodium fluorosilicate – to water and food supplies.

According to the British Fluoridation Society, as of November 2012, roughly 5% of the world’s population was receiving artificially fluoridated water; 70% in the US, 80% in Australia, and 100% in Singapore and Hong Kong.

Fortunately, according to an employee at the Phuket Provincial Waterworks, Phuket’s tap water is not artificially fluoridated. However, that doesn’t mean it’s fluoride-free. The Thai Dental Association, in one test of locally-bottled water, found trace amounts between .08 and .16mg per liter.

And you can’t escape with bottled water either – a 2010 Chulalongkorn University study showed that all commercially bottled water sampled in Bangkok had fluoride levels ranging from .04 mg to Thailand’s maximum allowed amount of .7mg per liter. Whether this was artificial or natural fluoride is not clear, but I’m willing to bet that, at least for the brands with higher concentrations, it is artificial. Most European countries have outright banned water fluoridation.

Proponents of water fluoridation are quick to cite unqualified and even invalidated studies about how fluoride prevents cavities and tooth decay. But does it really?

Try reading more current studies about the causes of skeletal fluorosis and all of its advanced conditions including osteoporosis and osteosarcoma (bone cancer). While you’re at it, read about the effects of fluoride on the thyroid and pineal glands.

Or easier still, just read the warning label on your tube of toothpaste.

0.7mr/l? That's a lot. But look at the milk products, too. Thailand is one of the few countries, the Borrow Foundation, depending on location, is fluoride adding to milk, to powdered milk or to yogurt. Happy new year!

I have sice a half year an atmospheric water generator so I make my own water from the air. Same as rain water, natural water from the air, which has been drunk forever.

Alcohol, sugar, fatty and acidic foods, traffic smog, secondhand smoke... be more worried about the other items you listed, than worrying about government conspiracies to poison your water! Good grief. Happy New Year! If you can make it another 48 hours! :)

Just curious, what are Mr Layne's credentials? PHD? Degree'd medical researcher? Or just some nut case trying hard to fill the world with nonsense. Fluoride is a naturally occurring element in all water supplies at various concentrations. Can't run from it. You've been drinking it since birth. Get over it.

Ivan Gort, I've given due diligence to this topic. The "fluoride" added to water and food supplies in the US, Ireland, Australia, Singapore, etc, is artificial AND toxic. Sodium fluoride, fluorosilicic acid and sodium fluorosilicate – these are not naturally occurring fluorides; they are toxic industrial byproducts... no conspiracy here, just facts.

Also by your own article the Thais claim no fluoride is added to the water. Maybe you should go out and randomly test several water wells around Phuket, then report the results. I suspect you will find more than just the naturally occurring fluorides as I previously stated. Let us know what you find.

Sadly, a trip in a tour bus down Patong Hill or anywhere else in Thailand is almost certainly more dangerous than ingesting some fluoride or other toxins, not that these shouldn't be reduced. Just an observation. HNY to all those still living.

Not just Patong, Niku. Many of the islands' villages are still without the infrastructure needed to supply basic tap water, let alone florinated, potable. What concerns me is the mineral content (especially cassiterite) of well water – which most of us drink on a daily basis – not the nonsense in the story above.

Just finished reading this and for some reason my mind flashed back 30 years to a classic piece of investigative journalism in the Scottish Sunday Post. "Dinae (Don`t) Lick the Postage Stamps!" This was a Bernstein and Woodward worthy expose of possible bacteria on postage stamps in the bad old days of postage stamp licking.

Hilarious! I guess you were off sick when they taught chemistry at school. "Not naturally occurring fluorides" – oh ,dear. Sodium fluoride is an ionic compound; it is an atom of fluorine with an extra electron, and an atom of sodium with one electron missing. You remember sodium? It's half of sodium chloride: salt. Better not go in the sea – it's full of it!

I must humbly restate (for the benefit of others mostly) that sodium fluoride (and the other fluorides added to water) IS/ARE NOT naturally occurring compounds – they are produced from chemical reactions, i.e. aluminum smelting and fertilizer production waste – not from the sea or extracted from the earth! Perhaps you're thinking of calcium fluoride (CaF2) which does occur naturally and is less toxic to humans.

I won't even bother addressing fallacious and ignorant comments. Such ill-informed agitators are free to carry on consuming forced mass medication at their own will. As for those who understand and can discern the difference between facts and propaganda, please give this topic your own "due diligence", starting with all the facts presented here.

Steve, you wrote a bad article. You rated "alcohol, sugar, fatty and acidic foods, traffic smog, [and] secondhand smoke" as 'perhaps' more dangerous than water, and – by your own example – toothpaste. Your premise is alarmist and ill-conceived. Granted, it's an interesting topic, but you approached it poorly, and in the tone of a paranoid, urine-filtering conspiracy theorist. A journalist you are not.

Steve M – if that's your real name – you have only ignored/avoided the facts, yet have contributed nothing to the topic other than negativity and disrespect. Nowhere did I write that water (that's two parts of hydrogen, one part oxygen) or toothpaste are more dangerous than the said poisons. TOPIC: Artificial fluroidation. FACT: sodium fluoride, fluorosilicic acid and sodium fluorosilicate ARE HIGHLY TOXIC when ingested.

Swallowing fluoride toothpaste and ingesting artificial fluoride in water can be highly detrimental to your health/intelligence. That doesn't mean drinking (un-fluoridated) water / brushing your teeth is dangerous! As for the other trolls so quick to scream "alarmist", "conspiracy" or "paranoia" – this is not the 1960s or 1970s. We live in an information/research based society – all the facts are available. Go read!
