PHUKET: Numbered are the days of expensive and overpriced construction, home improvement, furnishing, landscaping and gardening materials in Phuket: The Central Retail Group have officially opened the doors of their Thai Watsadu store on Thepkrasattri Road in Thalang, just north of the Heroines Monument.

Phuket Governor Maitree Inthusut presided over the ribbon cutting this morning, which was also attended by a number of local officials, executives and media. In his inauguration speech, Gov Maitree described the new center as a “supermarket for builders”.

“Home improvement” doesn't do justice to the store; “city improvement” is a more accurate term, considering its sheer size and selection of materials – superior to anything else on the island or region for that matter. Thai Watsadu Phuket stocks everything builders could ever need for their projects – building, refurbishing, electrical, plumbing, landscaping or gardening – boasting over 100,000 items at wholesale prices.

With retail space of more than 21,500 square meters on a 41 rai plot, the new outlet will be operated on a membership basis, with promotional memberships being offered this morning for as little as 20 baht.

With parking for up to 120 vehicles, the new Phuket outlet – Thai Watsadu's 35th and reportedly largest branch – employs 300 locals, and represents an 800 million baht investment.

Thai Watsadu is open from 7:30am until 7pm. For more information, call 076-601300 or visit thaiwatsadu.com.

You just gotta luv a Guv who can attend an opening of a hardware store while the entire government is shut down. Party on, [deleted]! Anyone else see what I do? No? Well, put on your night goggles.

120 car spaces? Does not seem to be enough for the size of the place. Do the 300 employees have their own parking? Both car and motorcycle?

Nightmare is you. If you make a completely illogical comment in these circumstances, (when the government is shut down and its head could have had a nice day off like all his subordinates), then what would you have posted if the government had NOT been shut down? You sound like that horsey foreign girl who is always posting bitter comments against Thais here.... Sweet something....

Above is just a personal slur from a user with a vendetta, apparently. As Tland is in a crises [sic], seems to me, in my opinion of course, which I'm entitled to,(although many with small discourse skills seem to think not) that the Governor should not be out on this kind of frivolity. In fact, has he gained from it? BTW editor "Dude," as in, "Party on,.." is simply an expression of irresponsible behavior.

Seriously think these products/brands are any different than Tesco Lotus or Homeworks? Where would these come from? I have never seen any other quality, even in Bangkok. Hope I am wrong.

Jeremy, you obviously are no gentleman, attack a lady on line, I think it's a bit cowardly. As The Night Mare said, I'm sure the Governor could find a lot better things to do than open a hardware store. Or did I miss where Phuket was now squeaky clean? Having been to a number of Thai Watsadu stores I can say that they have no more than the others, in fact for some items they have a worse selection.
